This work documents how concurrent versus consecutive tobacco use affects LLPv2 and PLCOm2012 lung cancer risk inputs.

Key points covered:

  • Explains why overlapping tobacco use should not be double-counted as extra smoking duration.
  • Compares prototype v4.1, v4.2 and v4.3 data capture:
    • v4.1/v4.2 collect one overall smoking duration, which is weaker for PLCOm2012.
    • v4.3 captures duration per tobacco type, which better supports overlap analysis.
  • Adds worked examples for:
    • cigarettes and roll-ups
    • cigarettes and weekly large cigar use
  • Documents cigarette-equivalent conversions:
    • 1 roll-up = 0.5g rolling tobacco
    • 1 roll-up = 2 cigarette-equivalents
    • 1 large cigar = 4 cigarette-equivalents
  • Clarifies that LLPv2 is mainly affected by calendar smoking duration, while PLCOm2012 is affected by both duration and intensity.
  • Notes limitations around rolling tobacco quantity bands and the need for representative values when calculating PLCOm2012.
